Director

Mick O'Neill graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney, specialising in Mathematical Statistics. He completed his PhD as an Assistant Lecturer in that Department, and in 1976 accepted a lectureship in Biometry in the Faculty of Agriculture, from where he recently retired as Associate Professor. His early interests were in multivariate analysis and contingency tables. More recently he has focused on statistical and biological modelling of seed germination, and on technical aspects of residual analysis (such as testing for variance heterogeneity).

Since 1970 he has mixed his teaching and research activities with statistical consulting to the agricultural profession, to industry and the wider community. He has run many short courses during this period, for example to the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and to Sydney Water.

Mick has a keen interest in Asia, having trained several young Indonesian academics to PhD. He has conducted many short courses in Indonesia and Laos for the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and other organisations. For these courses he used what is now the Discovery Edition of GenStat. Mick is a Certified GenStat Trainer.

Consultants

Several consultant statisticians are available to assist you in analysing and interpreting your data. These include:

  • Dave Grayson. Dave continues as an active consultant statistician since taking early retirement as Associate Professor in Quantitative Methods in the Department of Psychology at the University of Sydney. His early university training was interrupted while he served in Vietnam as a conscript in the Royal Australian Infantry. He returned to university and was awarded First Class Honours and a PhD in Psychology. He has published extensively during a distinguished career, specialising in factor analysis, structural equation models and psychometrics.

  • Peter Thomson. Peter worked for a number of years in Biometry at the University of Sydney before moving into the Faculty of Veterinary Science, where he is currently Associate Professor.  His initial studies were at the University of Sydney with a BSc majoring Zoology and Mathematical Statistics, followed by a research MSc (small mammal population ecology) and MAppStat at Macquarie University, and then a PhD at Sydney University, researching statistical models in neurobiology.  He has also worked in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney in epidemiology and biostatistics.  He currently specialises in statistical genetics, especially in animal genetics, although he is comfortable in any applied statistical field.
  • Louise Helby initially worked as a consultant statistician in Public Health. In recent years she has taught Biometry at the University of Sydney, and consulted in several areas, including agricultural and animal sciences, chiropractic and clinical trials.
  • Maryann Ebsworth is currently on leave from StATS. We wish her and her new born son Kestrel all the best, and hope she is able to resume her role in the company in the near future.
